Re: Horns for the NZ
Hi Frank,
I am very convinced that this bike came with this horn fitted ex-works.
Very interesting!
Regards
Thomas

Frank, this is now fixed.Frank wrote:Thomas pictures of the NZ250 from the exhibition are very interesting (of some reason I am not allowed to write anything in the NZ 250 thread so I comment it here).

The Hella Horn at my unrestored 1945 NZ/1
Re: Horns for the NZ
Hi,
The horn on Zylinders bike is very interesting. When was this type of horn used?
In a book I have, there is war time picture of a NZ 350 (1941-43) with the same type of horn as you have on your 350-1.
The picture of the bike was taken in the beginning of February 1944. One other strange thing with the picture is that the bike looks almost as new on the picture(no dents and no paint scratches) even if its a bike with the Art deco front fender and the picture is taken on the eastern front.
Can it be that the bike has been factory/depot overhauled and equipped with a horn like this?

NZ Horn
The horn is the same as VW 82/166 or for truck´s? I think many different horn typ´s are used. I have the same horn in new old stock with 12Volt. The NZ horn is a 6 Volt horn.
I think my horn is the original factory installed part. The first owner of the NZ don´t have other bikes or parts of bikes.
jens
pictures: horn 12 Volt . (I needed the srews for my NZ horn, which had been lost.)
Look: My horn is marked with B (3) 6

Re: Horns for the NZ
It seems that there were various horns used, and the ETL:s are not to trust to 100%.
Some off-topic: Jens bike is a fantastic source for learning, so I should have a few questions about it.
I looked at some pictures of the bike in the German forum and one interesting thing are the wheel nuts, they are silver/grey, are they zink coated?
How about the rear light, I assume that its the same Hella type that was used on NZ250, is there the Hella logo stamped on the housing or not?
These are just some strange questions that jumped into my head this evening

@ Frank:
The wheel nuts are zinc coated.
The rear light, i think it is Hella, I think there is no Hella sign. I must look for. The same "special" color at the Hella rear light and the Hella horn.

Re: Horns for the NZ
Thank you for the info Jens!
I was wondering a bit if the Hella rear light i have, without logo is ok, but now I am convinced its the right one.
One interesting thing on the image with the rear light is the cable to the rear light, I have always tought that there were only textilkabeln used on NZ, but this seems to be rubber/plastic
Are all the cables on the bike plastic/rubber coated, or just this one? Then it would be interesting to know when they changed fom textilkabeln to rubber/plastic.

Re: Horns for the NZ
The Hella rear light without the "HELLA" script on it, is correct. It simply has no "HELLA" script on it, because it was not manufactured by them.
During the progress of WW2 the resources in Germany became scarce and it was decided by the governement to standardise many things. One was in example the rearlamp.
Initially produced by Hella, it became the standard rear light to be used by all German motorcyles of a certain size. To satisfy demand also other companies manufactured the Hella light, but of course without the script.
