Warning on the NZ-1 Tank

Some-one claimed;
"As far as I know there have been two alternators for the 350-1. One with
45W and later one with 60W. The 45W alternator's output was not high
enough for the lights at low RPM. For that reason, the _early_ 350-1 had
the extra note, that when using the lights, the speed should not be
below 20, 30 or 40 km/h in the respective gears. For the later models
with 60W alternator this restriction did not apply".

To my opinion the tankscript for the first NZ-1 series had still the horizontal
stencils like the type-43 and NZ-WH, without that warning 20-30-40.
The later NZ-1 version had the stencils as shown on this very late 1-tank.
To my opinion the warning has nothing to do with the lights, but for optimal
use from the engine..........?
I could be wrong ! Note; ALL earlier DKW tank-stencils had the script 'Fahrt
mit Licht'.
Who knows for sure, and is it true that the earlier NZ-1 had another alternator
as the later version?

Hi Martin,

Please check D605-27 from 1944, pages 25 and 42. There is stated about the poor power output on low revs for the smaller alltenator (6M 35/45).

There is also stated that the smaller alternator was used on bikes with frame numbers between 618120-621732. Bikes with higer frame numbers used the more efficient 6M45/60 alternator.

There is also a instruction how to modify the alternator cover, if wanted to retrofit the more efficient alternator on older bikes.

About the stencils i have no idea.

You are wright Frank, I read it in the manual.
But their is no sign that the tankscript '20, 30, 40' has something to do with the
lower RPM. This is to my opinion not true because the picture from the 1945 tank shows also the script with the warning. And in 1945 the NZ had the heavier alternator 6M45/60. I have much other examples from such NZ-1 stencils used on the NZ-1. In the manual D605-27 is also to see that the early NZ had still the horizontal-stencils. Later they changed to the form wich could see on the pictures.
Thanks Frank,
Martin

This is a fact that puzzled me for some time now. D 607-27 says that only the 45W alternator needs speeds of 30km/h in 3rd and 40km/h in 4th gear to output enough power for charging battery and light operation. This matches the speeds given on the tank. The tank script also states "when running with lights", clearly linking it to alternator and battery.
The logic from this would be, that the early 350-1 with 45W alternator should have the speed notice while for later with 60W alternator there was no need for that.
This is in contrast to the evidence of original tanks from late machines with the speed warning.
Have there been refurbished 45W alternators that where used for the late machines?
D 607-27 describes how to change from 45W to 60W and states, that the 45W one has to be returned.
What alternator was used for the RT 125?

Matthias
