Take a medium gloss black, temperature resistant, paint. Sometimes you can find this stuff in hardware stores to paint oven/heater tubing

Thanks for your answer Thomas, I was a bit unclear in my question.

Most of the cylinders on restored NZ bikes are painted black, but when investigated some cylinders (manufacturing stamps on cylinders between 11/38 to 1/44), they all seems to have been factory painted with a quite light grey colour.
Many of them have later been overpainted in black or silver, but under the paint/rust/oil etc. the first layer is light grey, similar to the colour of the cylinder on the new/unused NZ 250 that Thomas pictured in the NZ 250 topic of this forum: gallery/image_page.php?image_id=83

Has Thomas or some other forum member seen this light grey colour on NZ cylinders? Were they all grey from factory, or has there been both black and grey cylinders??
