NZ Rear light

Post by Frank » Thu Jul 26, 2012 9:42 pm

Hi,

Is this a NZ rear light when the seller writes its without the opening for the registration plate lighting?

All NZ rear lights I have seen is with the registration plate lighting.

I remember someone wrote somewhere that there is a rear light for agricultural tractors or trailers very similar to the early NZ rear light, but bigger in size and without the registration plate lighting.

Hello Frank

As far as I can judge from the photo, this is identical to the rear light fitted to both my NZ 350s (1938 and 1940), i.e. without light for the number plate.

Hi TM250,

You mean you have on both your bikes rear lamps without the opening for the registration plate lighting?

All of them that I have seen has been with the opening. Unfortunately both ETL 58 and D605-12/1941 shows the tail ligt in a such angle so its not possibly to see if there is a opening, or not. Both the ETL:s gives only one part number for the rear light 08876.

Yes, I agree with you that otherwise it looks identical to the NZ tail light.

Anyone, any ideas? Has there been tail lights both with and without registration plate lighting?

Hello again Frank,

I had a closer look at my two rear lights and I will have to correct myself. My military bike does indeed have a rear light with a separate opening underneath for lighting up the numberplate. It was painted over and I just had not noticed that. On the other hand, my civil bike does not have this light opening. Otherwise the designs and configurations are identical even down to screw holes. However, the red glas on the military bike is different with a smaller diameter. But as always it is difficult to state with certainty that these parts are the same as when the bike left the factory. Interesting it is!
