Gear problems, hitting neutral, hard to find 2,3,4 gear

Post by jol1989 » Tue Jul 02, 2013 11:54 pm

Hi everyone, greetings from Norway.

I have bought a DKW NZ 350 from 1939 and made it fire up. But the gearing is horrible and almost not driveable.
Somehow it needs to be adjusted, any tips or manuals on this subject?

Thanks alot!

Hi and welcome to the forum. Your problems seem to come from:

a) worn shifter forks
b) worn shifter drum
c) maybe both of the above.

I fear you have to take the gearbox apart and inspect it. There is no means of adjusting the gearbox.

So I have to split the entire engine?

Are these parts easy to buy? Any reproduction stuff? Where to look?

Thank you !

Hi,

You dont need to split the engine, or even remove it from the frame, remove the alternator and after that you can remove the cover for the gearbox. If you need to dismantle the whole gearbox you have to remove the left engine cover and even dismantle the clutch. Very easy, German hightech :D

There are no repro parts available for the NZ 250/350 gearbox as far as I know.

Used gearbox parts are quite easy to to find for a -39 350 (same parts on NZ250).

Later model gearbox parts will not fit (without modifications).

I may also have some gearbox parts for -39 NZ, if you need, otherwise the best place to find them are ebay.de

If your engine is from -39 and your engine number i lower than 995761, then try to find parts from a engine with an engine number lower than 995761 (this is the first engine with the later model shift drum), can easyly be identifed by the longer type of gear change lever (the one coming out in the top of the cover covering the small chain sprocket).

A engine number should help to define which version of gearbox is on your bike.

I can help with gearbox parts!

DKW gearbox parts are all marked with a part no. That makes replacement quite easy.

Yep, Thomas is right, the DKW "mania" to mark almost every part with a part number and a manufacturing month/year makes its much easier for us 70 years later.

Offtopic: Saw that Thomas updated the archive.
