Basic info on DKW NZ 350's

Hi,
I'm new to this forum, I have just purchased a really nice NZ250 and have a couple of questions.
The bike came with no battery so I need to fit a new one, I've been told by someone who should know that all DKW are negative earth but on the wiring diagram it looks like positive earth, which is correct?
And is the ign light on the key switch a charging light and is it suppose to go out when the bikes running?

Hi,

All NZ models have negative earth and the - cable from the battery is connected to the engine block.
The charging ligth in the ignition switch cover should go out when the engine is running.

Thanks for the prompt reply.
I connected the battery and the bike started fine but the charging light doesn't go out. I've checked the obvious, fuses, wiring etc and everything looks OK but no charge when I measure the battery volts while it's running. Any ideas, what do the two capacitors in the control box do and how do I check them?

The two cartridges are not capacitors, rather Miller-type voltage regulators. The charging system is identical on both NZ 250 and 350, here in this topic are some discussions about charging problems: viewtopic.php?f=1&t=1454

In this connection I should like to mention reverse polarity alternators.
If you have clamped the battery incorrectly by mistake. Can happen yes.
Then the pilot light is not extinguished also.

Yep, Wolfgang is right.

If the battery has been wrongly connected, you have to make a re-polarisation, as mentioned in the link:

1.Dismantle the spulenkasten lid.
2.Connect the connectors 3(30+) and 1(connector for the bridge between schalter and regler) in spulenkasten with an wire for maximum 1 second (or with an flat end screwdriver between connector 3 and the metal bridge connecting both schalter or regler). Note! Dont connect the connectors for more than 1 seconds!
3. Thats it, a simple operation and your alternator have the right polarity after this operation.

Thanks for the reply's.
I haven't had time to do much today will try again tomorrow. The only thing I did last night was try swapping the cartridges for a spare set that came with the bike, when started the ign light stayed on but glowed much brighter as I revved it up. It looked as though it was charging but the opposite of what's required, any thoughts?
