NZ-1 Engine date??

Post by Paul » Sun Apr 29, 2007 2:32 am

When I bought the NZ-1 some years back now, the guy I bought it from also gave me another engine and a bunch of extra engine parts. I looked up on the data base today to find a number about the same and it doesn't seem to really match. The number on the block is 122030-1. From its construction, it is made for a NZ-1. Dip stick on top, etc. What year and model bike should it go on? Could it be for another type of DKW? Thanks

Rob, that's the engine number, or I think it's the engine number. My digital comera is acting up, but I'll try to get a picture and post it.

Hi Paul,

I am nearly 100% certain that this is not the engine no. but the part number of the engine casing. This part number matches the DKW / IZH system of part numbers. As (until now) there is no partslist for the -1 available anymore, it would be a good idea to adress other -1 to check their engines.

Best regards

Where then can the actual engine number be found on an engine? I am taking the number from the same spot the other engine number is found.

OK, updated with pics below? What do you guys think?

Hi Paul,

I think you have an engine thats been re-stamped. The reason I think this is, The font of the numbers is not correct, they should have a serrif.
There should be a star at the start and end of the number.

Have a look at the download section "How to indentify your DKW NZ" There is a picture there which shows a correct engine number, you'll see what I mean when you see it.

Regards Rob
Thanks

I think I will try to clean it with a wire brush and see what comes up. But from the shape and construction of it, it is a NZ 350-1 engine, correct? I didn't ask the guy where he got it from. I bought the bike before this awesome webpage was up and running, so I had very little info about the NZ before I bought it back in 2002.

Hi Paul,

I dont know much about the 350-1 or IZH engine, I know that the IZH doesnt have the removable transfer port covers, The later IZH has the crankcases made from aluminium. Not sure what the early one has.

Regards Rob
Thanks

Paul,

I think you should check as many other parts on the engine as possible for the Auto-Union rings. To my untrained eye this is a 350-1 engine.

You should also wirebrush the base of the cylinder, there should normally the common month/year stamp as seen in the pictures.

Good hunting

Well I did a little wire brushing on the base of the cylinder and what I found was 1 and 45 in a circle. So I guess, the cylinder at least, was produced in Jan 45'. Also I did some work on the serial number and could not find any "stars". But the engine I have on the bike doesn't have any "stars" either. That one matches up with the number sequence. What could it be?

Below is a pic of the number on the cylinder.
