Hi all,
I'm new to the website and hope to be an owner of a 1939 350NZ next week - subject to negotiations! I am looking for advice when buying a bike: I have seen the bike, it appears to be complete, the engine turns over but has not run for many years. Paintwork and all fittings are in good order, the clutch is free (on the lever) tyres and brakes again seem to be in reasonable condition. Oh, and it has a side-car!
I am told it is 1939 - is there a definitive way I can check this? I have downloaded the engine numbers from your website, so will check these, but are there any other obvious signs? It has the 'bucket' style mudguards, twin tank caps (are they both fillers?) the sidecar looks like an early Steib.
any help gratefully accepted!
thanks,
Chris

Re: buying a 350NZ
Hi,
If its a -39 NZ 350, the stamped frame number (can be found on the left upper rear frame member, under the seat) should be inside the range of the following ones:
472001-490000
499001-599996
540001-549000
The manufacturing year and month are normally stamped on both sides of the engine blocks, at the engine front mounting (close to the the both screws holding engine front mounting plates).
The stamping is a small circle, with the two last digits of the manufaturing year inside it and the manufacturing month outside the circle.
NZ shall not have two filler caps, all NZ:s between 1938 and spring 1944 has the filler cap on the right side of the tank and the combinated ignition/light switch is on the left side of the tank, like the bike on the first picture in this link:

Good luck with the bike!

Re: buying a 350NZ
Hi Frank,
thanks very much for the excellent information. If I could figure out how to do it I would send a photo! - I saw it in a small shop in France last month, and all being well I will be going over to collect the bike next weekend.
by coincidence I am travelling to Norway on business tomorrow - not very close to Finland I know, but as I am in the marine industry maybe I will visit the next Helsinki boat show and we could meet for a beer!
all best,
Chris

Hi Chris,
A cold beer is never wrong
Unfortunately its around 500km from the place where I live, to Helsinki
Earlier when I lived in the Helsinki region a part of my job was marine engines, so Helsinki International boat show is a well known place.

Re: buying a 350NZ
Hi all,
The latest 350NZ is now on English soil - probably 76 years later than originally intended!! My son and I collected it from Normandy yesterday - no known history yet so a lot of investigation needed. I've checked the numbers, so far I'm reassured that it is 1939:
engine: 848480
Frame: 482054
it has has a side-car, that I'm sure is a Stoye - it doesn't look like a Steib. I have only found a number '904' stamped into the bottom of the body.
will be busy unloading from the truck today, so will post photos as soon as possible.
