DKW NZ 350

Hello,

recently there are many horns sold at e-bay were the seller states that they are original for the NZ. In very few cases this is correct. Original horns are very rarely sold. I have the feeling that meanwhile any prewar HELLA horn is advertised as beeing for the NZ. If you are in doubt, please ask your question about horns here in this forum, I think I can help.

This is a huge problem, and I think that the best solution is to prepare some pictures in part section of this forum.
If I'm correct, there should be 3 types of horn for all NZ. Hella for early bikes, small Hella with bakelite bottom for 1943 and Seco for 350-1.
By the way, almost every Hella horn for SB models is offered as NZ.

Hi Peter,

the first "civilian" horn used is the HELLA unit, part number 08921 pictured below:



The horn is shown in partslist 58 and has a special bracket were the horn itself is mounted through 3 rubber bushings.



The second type used from 1941 onwards, part no. 9183, is the HELLA type shown below:



This horn was made from steel and has the more common fitting that uses a metal strip made from spring steel. It has approximately the same size as the "civilian" horn.

To my knowledge this horn was also used for the NZ350-1. At least a picture in the manual D605-27 (picture no.36) shows it.

Again to my knowledge, the smaller, bacelite, SECO horn was only used on the RT125. Also the Hella horn shown above, with a smaller diameter, was used for the RT125.

Hi Svenn!

You're right about Hella horns. There was first type for early NZ, and smaller one for late NZ and RT125.
Picture nr 36 from NZ350-1 manual shows small Hella, but as you probably know, pictures in this manual are mixed (NZ with alu engine pre 1943, NZ with 350-1 chassis 1943, and 350-1 with cast iron engine).
Take a look at picures nr 13 and 40 - it's not small Hella on them. It's Seco.
You're right that Seco was mounted on RT125, but the one for NZ350-1 is different.
I've got the other type of Seco horn for NZ350-1. As soon as possible I'll post few pictures of it.

I've seen such Hella's horn on few NZ motorcycles.
In my opinion this is only good looking exchanger of original one.
Has anybody any idea?

There is: ''SECO WIEN MADE GERMANY'' in front of horn, and ''6 V'' on back of it.

Is this horn correct for a DKW nz 350? i just took it of a DKW nz 350 from 1942 that i'm gonna restore.

Thomas pictures of the NZ250 from the exhibition are very interesting (of some reason I am not allowed to write anything in the NZ 250 thread so I comment it here).

The horn on the bike is very interesting, if its really the factory mounted horn, its a Hella KMS, the same horn as used on NZ 500 and totally different from the NZ 250/350 horn shown in ETL 58.

Has any of you seen this type of horn mounted on a NZ 250/350 before?

I just ask because when I bought my -40 NZ 350 it had the same KMS horn as on the NZ 250 on the pictures, but I tought someone had mounted a NZ500 horn on the bike, so I bought a correct one according to the ETL.
Now I just started to wonder if the KMS horn could have been the right one for my bike?
Any ideas?
