The cap from Mike Dunn could be original. There were definetly caps built with a measuring cup, for the 350 and 350/43 not only for the 350-1 as Wilhelm states above. I have pictures to prove that and my 350/43 had one of those caps. Some time ago I gave Mike Dunn one of those cups.

DKW's were exported, also in goverment/army livery. So why should not the writing be in english? The english manual talks abaut 3 cu. inch of oil for 3 gallons.

As DKW was expecting harder driving conditions and low quality oil abroad (typical German attitute...at home everything has a better quality --No offense, I am German). So it was quite sensible to put a bit more oil -2 cups for 4,5 liters (4,5 liters = 1 Imperial Gallon) into the fuel than at home (2 cups for 5 liters). The imperial Gallon was used for measurement, because there were hardly bikes exported to the "U.S.-gallon region".

So to me all is fine, no replica or hoax here.

Regards

Before 1945 the Gallon (American or Brittish) was not the same as a European Liter. But it says "Twice to 1 gallon" so it would not destroy the engine, in fact there is even more oil in the petrol then. But then,.......the script 1/25 doesn't match to what it says ?!?!

The german writing also says two measuring caps per litre....

Two measuring cups in a pre 1945 gallon are much less then 2 cups per litre, not more... That´s the problem I see.

The measuring cup of mdunn`s cap has the german writing

" 2x für 1 Liter", which means: Two measuring caps for one litre.

On the other side of the measuring cup is said in English:

"Twice for one gallon"

As I wrote some postings ago, in 1945 a gallon was not equal to one litre (actaully about 4,5 litres) , so you would have a huge difference of oil (In my opinion much to less) when following the instructions on the cup.

This is the problem I see, and what makes the whole cap incorrect for me.

It clearly says "twice for 5 liters" not for 1 liter!!

Exactly! That is why I see no issue here.

Best regards

Hi All,

I have an identical petrol cap to this with English writing stamped in. Its on my 1937 SB500, which was imported into the UK before the war, Its a genuine import slightly different from the German model, chrome and paint. So that probably explains the English.
Thanks
