Engine Data Base

Post by TM250 » Tue Mar 01, 2011 11:04 pm

Having just become a member of the forum I may be bringing up a topic that has been discussed before. Anyway, I'll give it a try. I find the frame number based database both interesting and useful. However, I have often wished there was a similar data base based on engine number and month of manufacturing. These figures are generally easily available on en engine unit and may yield interesting information on monthly production figures throughout and also give a good indication of what series of frame numbers might be most likely for frames that do not have correct frame numbers. In addition, I know many cases (including myself) where engines only are available without frames, since these are often kept as spares or having been sourced from other categories of equipent that have used the old 350 engine as a prime mover for something or other. What do other forum members think?

As you can see from the database, the idea of collecting engine manufacturing dates is not new. This data would be ideal to determine, with reasonable accuracy, when the whole bike was build. Unfortunately very few owners send me the month/year of their engine. In case of the 350-1 engine it is also more difficult, because the month/year are only engraved into the gears of the gearbox and many owners haven't take their engine that far apart.
In the beginning I tried to give owners more information by writing the document "How to identify your NZ" ...no improvement.
I think the problem is that everyone has the frame no. available when he sits on his computer, but not the engine month/year. So instead of going back into the shed to look for this data, they prefer to skip this point.

If I sound frustrated... yes I am.

Engine Data Base

Thanks for your comments. I very well understand your frustration which I have often shared when looking through the frame data base. There are unfortunately too many gaps in the column for engine manufacturing data. Perhaps it may be an idea to also allow "engine only" data to be entered in the same way as now you can enter a frame only. Even if they end up at the end or at the beginning of the present list it will be a tiny step in the right direction. In my own case it would probabley allow me to enter three more engines that do not have a frame associated with them.

Engine Data Base

Post by TM250 » Sat Mar 05, 2011 8:17 pm

OK Thomas, here are two to start with:
- engine number 996633 dated 1.1940
- engine number 1101238 dated 7.1940

In addition I have an "empty" engine block 1180679, apparently from 1942. This may be a rather controversial one since it is a "Grauguss" version. Will therefore revert on this one after further checking.

Best regards

Hi guys,

Here are some more:

998420 3.40
990586 5.39
990375 5.39
849293 4.39
849041 4.39

I think I will find some more when i dig deeper

Engine Data Base

Here is another engine number that probabely does not make sense, since it is a "grauguss"-engine. The unlikely number appears both at the usual place for such engines and at the cylinder flange. Maybe it is all a fake number although it is hard to see why anyone should want to fake en engine number. Comments are welcome.ImageImage

Hi Folks,

1. I have added your engines to the DKW database.

2. The number stamped into the cast block might be the engine number of a 1942 NZ350 (Alu engine). In some countries the engine number is documentet in the vehicles registration. So if your original engine is gone and you have another, in this case cast engine, available, you have to grind out the engines number and re-stamp the "new" motor it with the old number.

Just a guess from my side

I agree with Thomas. Also here in Finland many old motorcyckles are registered and documented only by engine nr. The registration documents for my -39 KS200 was found by searching on engine no in the archives. No frame number at all was used when the motorcycle was registred.
